"There's too many motorbikes out on the road", says Anu.
Perhaps so, but then again, if there were cars instead of the motorbikes, then you'd have too many cars clogging up the road, and traffic would be worse.
Of course, it doesn't help that on a two-lane road, there's three or four lanes of traffic instead. Motorbikes and bicycles worm in and around the cars, and squeeze into every available space. No orderly lines out here.

And then the people ... since the cars do not stop at all, people will just walk out on the street, and dart through a gap in the oncoming traffic. It's up to the motorist to swerve and brake to a halt.
I still find it amazing that I have not seen anybody, any cars, any bikes, any thing hit each other ...

Kathmandu traffic ... tuk-tuks, motor-bikes, and a cow ...

Here's a glimpse of what Kathmandu traffic is like ....

After the rains ...

The sun came out later in the afternoon, for a nice enough sunset.

Rain all day ...

It rained all day, yesterday.
Short periods of rain in the morning, but by mid-day, it was a continuous downpour.

It didn't rain as hard as during the monsoon season, but there were still flooding in parts of the town. People were wading in ankle-deep water on the sidewalks, the streets, and if it wasn't high enough, the first floor of the stores.
And of course, traffic. Took an hour to get home, wading through the traffic, the motorcycles, the floods, the people.
The road to the apartment building is a narrow, winding dirt road. We asked to be dropped off by the nearby hotel lobby, so that we won't have to walk through the puddles and mud to the apartment building entrance. Wet from the rain is okay; didn't want to deal with all that mud ...

Mountain view

The mountains are visible again, they told me.
During the monsoon rains and clouds, they couldn't see the mountains for a while. Now that the monsoon season is almost over, you can see the mountains again.

View from the window

Early morning.
What's outside the window, from the apartment.
Lots of construction going on, all over the city.

Finally here ....

After a day and a half of flying, finally arrived in Kathmandu. Shant and Rabindra met me inside, and took care of all the paperwork.

Outside, the big white jeep with 'UN' on the sides met us. I had forgotten about these UN vehicles - felt conscious seating in it, and felt that everybody could see us from a mile away. But it was okay - everybody seemed to ignore it, and just passed around us.
